This deceleration device is provided with: a cylindrical braking member (1) fixed to a rotary shaft; a plurality of permanent magnets (3) arranged across the circumferential direction, with the rotary shaft as the center; a cylindrical magnet holding ring (2) that holds the permanent magnets (3); and a switching mechanism that switches between a braking state and a non-braking state. The permanent magnets (3) include a plurality of first magnets (3A) disposed at intervals in the circumferential direction, and a plurality of second magnets (3B) disposed between the first magnets (3A). The magnetic poles of the first magnets (3A) are arranged in the radial direction, with the rotary shaft as the center, and the magnetic poles of neighboring first magnets (3A) alternate in the circumferential direction. The magnetic poles of the second magnets (3B) are arranged in the circumferential direction. On the side facing the braking member (1), the N pole of a first magnet (3A) is adjacent, in the circumferential direction, to the N pole of a second magnet (3B), and the S pole of a first magnet (3A) is adjacent, in the circumferential direction, to the S pole of a second magnet (3B). The magnet holding ring (2) is ferromagnetic.
