Abstract:

This electromagnetic retarder comprises the following: a main retarder unit comprising a stator yoke, a plurality of electromagnetic coils that have iron cores and are laid out at intervals in the circumferential direction of the stator yoke, and a steel rotor that rotates about the stator yoke in accordance with the rotation of a vehicle tire; a control device; and a drive device that has two or more transistors that are turned on and off by drive pulses from the control device. The abovementioned electromagnetic coils form multiphase wiring, the electromagnetic coils for each phase each form a resonant circuit together with a capacitor, each of the aforementioned transistors is inserted serially between at least two phases of the multiphase wiring, and the rotational speed of a rotating magnetic field induced in the electromagnetic coils by the rotation of the abovementioned steel rotor is lower than the rotational speed of said steel rotor. This electromagnetic retarder is characterized in that torque is controlled by controlling the energization period of one phase of the abovementioned wiring that has one of the abovementioned transistors inserted serially therein by turning said transistor on and off.
