Title:
ELECTRONIC INTELLIGENT INDENTER
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2004010082
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
An electronic intelligent indenter system (10) that determines the hardness and the case depth of a hardened portion (12) of a test part (14) in a non-destructive manner. The system (10) employs an electronic indenter tool (22) having a tip (24). To determine the depth of the case hardened portion (12) of the part (14), the indenter tip (24) is placed in contact with the surface (16) of the part (14), and a laser (30) emits a laser beam pulse (32) that impinges the surface (16) of the part (14) proximate the tip (24). The laser pulse beam (32) generates ultrasonic waves (34) that propagate into the part (14). The ultrasonic waves (34) reflect off of a transition (18) between the case hardened portion (12) and an unhardened portion (20) of the part (14). A d etector (40) i n the indenter tool (22) detects the reflected ultrasonic waves (36). The ultrasonic waves (36) cause the detector (40) to generate a signal identifying the time between when the laser pulse (32) is emitted and when the reflected wave (36) is received. The signal is analyzed by a controller (28) that compares the signal to a standard of calibration for a reflected wave from a hardened portion of a calibration part having a greater depth than the test part.
