The present invention provides an elevator device and an elevator retrofit method. The elevator retrofit method is designed to retrofit an existing elevator device to an elevator device which uses a different roping system and a different type of traction machine. The elevator retrofit method comprises: a first step of installing a machine beam in a space formed in a machine room from which an existing traction machine is removed, and installing a new traction machine on the machine beam; a second step of installing a car suspension sheave on a car, installing a counterweight suspension sheave on a counterweight, and disposing the car and the counterweight in an elevator shaft; and a third step of winding a main rope around the car suspension sheave, a main sheave provided on the traction machine, and the counterweight suspension sheave, and fixing the opposite ends of the main rope to the machine beam, wherein, in the first step or the second step, the traction machine and the car suspension sheave are disposed such that a first direction, which is the rotation-axis direction of the main sheave, is inclined to a second direction, which is the rotation-axis direction of the car suspension sheave.
