Abstract:

In an internal combustion engine, an exhaust purification catalyst (13) having an oxidation function is placed in an engine exhaust path and a small-sized oxidation catalyst (14) and a fuel supply valve (15) for supplying fuel to the small-sized oxidation catalyst (14) are placed in the engine exhaust path on the upstream of the exhaust purification catalyst (13). To activate the exhaust purification catalyst (13), the small-sized catalyst (14) is heated by fuel supplied from the fuel supply valve (15). To further raise the temperature of the exhaust purification catalyst (13), the amount of the fuel supplied from the fuel supply valve (15) is increased to cause the small-sized oxidation catalyst (14) to discharged reformed fuel.
