Abstract:

The invention provides fluoroalkyl compounds which are highly soluble in water and excellent in the ability to lower the surface tension of an aqueous composition, specifically, compounds which are represented by the general formula (1): W-C_nF_2n-X-(CH₂CH₂O)_a-Y (1) [wherein n is an integer of 2 to 6; W is hydrogen or fluoro; X is -M-O- (wherein R is lower alkyl; and M is alkylene which may be substituted with hydroxyl) or the like; a is an integer of 10 to 50; and Y is optionally substituted alkyl having 4 to 19 carbon atoms, -M’-C_mF_2m-W (wherein m is an integer of 2 to 6; W’ is hydrogen or fluoro; and M’ is alkylene which may be substituted with hydroxyl), or the like], and which satisfy the relationship: MW_EO/MW_F = 2.2 to 10 [wherein MW_EO is the molecular weight of polyoxyethylene group (the moiety of (CH₂CH₂O)_a) and MW_F is the molecular weight of fluoroalkyl groups (the moieties of W-C_nF_2nand C_mF_2m-W’)] and have Griffin’s HLB values of 10 to 16.
