Description:
FOLDABLE FACE MASK AND METHODS OF MANUFACTURING AND USE

1

This invention relates to a face mask and to a method of manufacturing and/ or using a face mask.

As a result of the COVID pandemic, it is currently a legal requirement in many countries of the world for a face mask to be worn in public spaces, and particularly, although not exclusively, in indoor public spaces. For example, face masks have to be worn in supermarkets, hospitals, shops, gyms, restaurants, bars, sporting venues, schools and/ or the like. A common problem with face masks is that a user may often forget to take a face mask with them when they wish to enter a public space where wearing a mask is compulsory. This is particularly the case if a user spontaneously decides to enter a public space without it being pre-planned. Even if a user remembers to take a mask with them, a further common problem is the difficulties in safely and hygienically storing the mask when the user is not using the same. The user may scrunch up a fabric mask and place it in a pocket of a garment they are wearing or in a bag. However, this can often result in the mask looking creased and unsightly when it is taken out of the pocket or bag and eventually worn. Since other items may also be placed in the pocket of the user’s garment or bag, the mask may become soiled and/ or damaged prior to use. Although fabric and paper masks may be foldable by a user in an arbitrary manner to fit into a storage place chosen by the user, the masks often fall out of the user folded shapes over time and still suffer from the problem of damage and becoming soiled when placed in a user’s garment pocket or bag.

It is therefore an aim of the present invention to provide a face mask that overcomes the abovementioned problems.

It is a further aim of the present invention to provide a method of manufacturing and/ or using a face mask that overcomes the abovementioned problems. It is a yet further aim of the present invention to provide face mask apparatus including a face mask and storage reservoir and/ or a method of using and/ or manufacturing the same.

According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a face mask, said face mask including a body portion and ear attachment means for allowing a user to detachably attach the body portion to their ears to position the face mask across at least part of their face in use, said body portion including two or more panel members, and wherein one or more fold lines are provided between said two or more panel members to allow the panel members to be movable relative to each other between a folded condition and an extended or unfolded condition in use.

Thus, the present invention provides a face mask with one or more fold lines pre defined thereon, thereby allowing the face mask to be moved between a folded or storage condition and an extended, unfolded or in-use condition in use. The pre defined fold lines ensure the face mask is foldable in a neat, reproducible and consistent manner. Furthermore, the ability to fold the face mask in a neat, reproducible and consistent manner allows the face mask to be stored in a suitable storage reservoir or storage package when not in use and/ or prior to first use. This allows the face mask to be kept clean and/ or in a hygienic manner when not in use. It also allows the face mask to be moved to a relatively small and compact size when not in use, thereby allowing the face mask to be fitted into a relatively small and compact storage space, such as in a wallet, purse, handbag, pocket of a garment and/ or the like. The face mask is typically of a relatively larger size when in the extended or unfolded condition.

Preferably at least one of the panel members is movable relative to at least one other of the panel members about the one or more fold lines when moving between the folded and extended conditions in use. This movement is preferably any or any combination of pivotable, hingeable, slidable or foldable movement. Preferably two or more of the panel members partially, wholly or substantially wholly overlap with each other when in the folded condition.

Preferably at least part of the two or more of the panel members, and further preferably at least part of all the of the panel members, are moved a spaced distance apart from each other to form the extended condition. For example, the panel members are moved out of an overlapping position with each other in order to form the extended condition.

In one example, the face mask can be flat, linear or planar when in the folded condition and/or ion the extended condition when not in use. However, the provision of the fold lines allows the panel members to be easily moved to different angular positions relative to each other to allow the face mask to be easily moulded around a user’s face when worn by the user in the unfolded condition in use.

Preferably the two or more panel members are provided in a linear or substantially linear arrangement. For example, an end of one panel member can be joined to or at an end of an adjacent panel member via one of said fold lines, or a side of one panel member can be joined to or at a side of an adjacent panel member.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the face mask in figure 1 when in a folded or storage condition in a storage package according to an embodiment of the present invention;

Figure 3 is an example of how the storage package in figure 2 is locatable in a wallet in use according to an embodiment of the present invention;

Figure 4 illustrates how the face mask in figure 1 can be removed from or inserted into the storage package in figure 2 according to an embodiment of the present invention;

Figure 5 illustrates use of the face in figure 1 on a user;

Figure 6 is a top plan view of a face mask in an extended or in-use condition according to a further embodiment of the present invention; and Figure 7 is a top plan view of a face mask in an extended or in-use condition to a yet further embodiment of the present invention.

Referring firstly to figure 1, there is illustrated a face mask 10 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The face mask 10 includes a body portion and ear attachment means for attaching the face mask to a user’s ears to allow the body portion to be positioned across a user’s face in use.

The body portion of the face mask 10 includes a plurality of panel members separated by pre-defined fold lines to allow the face mask to be movable between a folded or storage condition and an extended or in-use condition. This allows the face mask to be foldable in a neat, reproducible and consistent manner, thereby allowing the face mask to be stored in a suitable storage reservoir or storage package when not in use and/ or prior to first use (as will be described in more detail below). The face mask can therefore be kept clean and stored in a hygienic manner when not in use. It also allows the face mask to be moved to a small and compact size when in the folded condition, thereby allowing the face mask to be fitted into a relatively small and compact storage space, such as in a wallet, purse, handbag, pocket of a garment and/ or the like. The face mask can be moved between the folded condition and the extended condition as often as is required.

The face mask 10 in this example comprises a single blank of material including a first panel member 12, a second panel member 14 joined to the first panel member 12 along a first end via fold line 16, and a third panel member 18 joined to the first panel member 12 along a second end via fold line 20. The second end is opposite to the first end. A fourth panel member 22 is joined to the first panel member 12 along a side edge via a fold line 24. A fifth panel member 26 is joined to the first panel member 12 along a side edge via a fold line 28. Fold lines 24 and 28 are on opposing side edges of first panel member 12.

A sixth panel member 30 is joined to second panel member 14 via fold line 32 and to fourth panel member 22 via fold line 34. A seventh panel member 36 is joined to third panel member 18 via fold line 38 and to fourth panel member 22 via fold line 40. An eight panel member 42 is joined to third panel member 18 via fold line 44 and to fifth panel member 26 via fold line 46. A ninth panel member 48 is joined to fifth panel member 26 via fold line and to second panel member 14 via fold line 52.

In this illustration, panel members 12, 14, 18 are of the same size and shape. Fourth and fifth panel members 22, 26 are of the same size and shape to each other but are different in size to panel members 12, 14, 18. All the panel members 12, 14, 18, 22, 26 are rectangular in shape. Panel members 30, 36, 42 and 48 are of the same size and shape to each other and are triangular. However, it will be appreciated that the panel members can be of any size, shape and/ or design as long as the panel members of the face mask are movable via the fold lines between a folded condition and an extended condition. Fold lines 34, 16, 50 are parallel and opposite to fold lines 40, 20 and 46. Fold lines 32, 24, 38 are parallel and opposite to fold lines 52, 28, 44. Fold lines 34, 16, 50, 40, 20, 46 are perpendicular to fold lines 32, 24, 38, 52, 28, 44.

Ear attachment means in the form of loops 1, T are provided at opposite ends of the face mask 10. More particularly, loops 1, T have a first end 54 and a second end 56 joined to opposite corners of second panel member 14 and third panel member 18. The ends of the loops 1, 1’ can be joined to the panel members via any suitable means but in this example they are joined via adhesive 6.

Printed subject matter, designs or logos can be provided on the panel members to change or improve the aesthetic appearance of the face mask if required.

In the embodiment shown in figures 1-5, filter material 3 can be provided substantially centrally of the face mask 10 to coincide with the mouth and nose area of a user 58 when the mask is worn. For example, the filter material 3 can extend across panel members 22, 12 and 26. The filter material is typically of such type to allow gas or air to pass through the same but prevent or help prevent the passage of viruses, dirt, particles and/ or the like. The remainder of the material of the face mask can be paper 2, although any suitable material can be used for any section of the mask as required. However, in the alternative embodiment shown in figure 6, the face mask 102 could be provided with no filter material 3 or all the panel members of the face mask could be be formed from filter material.

The fold lines in the face mask of the present invention are pre-defined or pre formed, thereby allowing the face mask to be folded in a number of different ways to move from the extended flat condition shown in figure 1, to a folded storage condition, shown in figure 2. The folded storage condition is substantially smaller and more compact than the extended flat condition, thereby allowing a more easily transportable and storable face mask to be provided.

The fold lines and panel members of the face mask are such that the face mask can be folded in a number of different ways such that all the panel members fold in an overlapping arrangement onto the first panel member 12. For example, panel members 30, 22 and 36 could fold about fold lines 32, 24, 38 onto panel members 14, 12 and 18 respectively. Panel members 48, 26, 42 could fold about fold lines 52, 28, 44 onto panel members 14, 12, 18 respectively. Loop 1 could be folded onto second panel member 14 and then the second panel member 14 (with panel members 30 and 48 already folded onto it) could be folded onto first panel member 12 along fold line 16. Loop T could be folded onto third panel member 18 and then the third panel member 18 (with panel members 36 and 42 already folded onto it) could be folded onto first and second panel members 12, 14.

The face mask 10, when in the folded condition, can then be inserted into and/or removed from a storage package in the form of envelope 4. This maintains the face mask 10 in a folded and hygienic condition when it is not in use and keeps it clean, neat and compact.

The envelope 4 is also typically formed from a blank of material folded in a conventional manner to form a compartment therein for containing the folded face mask in use. An opening of the compartment has a closure means in the form of a flap 104 forming part of the envelope that can be moved between open and closed conditions in use to allow access to the interior of the compartment.

The size and shape of the envelope is slightly larger than the folded face mask 10, thereby allowing the face mask to fit snugly in the envelope compartment, as shown in figures 2 and 4. The envelope in turn is of such a size and shape to be fitted easily into a wallet 9 or purse of a user, thereby allowing a user to easily store and transport the face mask when not in use. This allows a user to always store a face mask in their wallet so that they never forget to take a face mask when they are out and about.

It will be appreciated that the number, size shape and/ or design of panel members and the arrangements of fold lines between the panels members can be varied while still falling within the scope of the present invention. For example, figure 7 shows a further example of a face mask 106 where a larger number of panel members 108 are provided compared to the embodiment shown in figure 1. Equally, fewer panel members could be provided to that illustrated in the face mask 10 in figure 1 if required.
