Title:
IN PLACE SUPERFINISHING OF CRANKSHAFT THRUST BEARING FACES
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2001071171
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
An apparatus for the in situ superfinishing of crankshaft thrust bearing surfaces (14) includes an oscillator (22), an oscillation arm (24) connected to the oscillator (22) such that the oscillation arm (24) is reciprocable by the oscillator (22), a caliper (32) disposed on the oscillation arm (24) remote from the oscillator (22), and at least two abrasive pads (42) disposed on the caliper (32). The oscillation arm (24) facilitates the extension of the arm into the engine to cause the abrasive pads (42) to engage the bearing (14) and to abrasively superfinish the surfaces of the bearing (14). A method for the in situ superfinishing of the surfaces of the bearing (14) includes operably locating a superfinishing apparatus adjacent the engine, extending the abrasive pads (42) into the engine, causing the abrasive pads (42) to engage the surfaces to be superfinished, and oscillating the abrasive pads (42) in contact with the surfaces to be superfinished.
