Abstract:
This ignition device repeatedly applies a high voltage from a high-voltage-generating circuit across the electrodes of a spark plug. In a combustion chamber in which a gas flow is present, activated species generated by an initial discharge are caused to flow downstream by the gas flow, the resistance (Rdc) of this portion of the air-fuel mixture being temporarily lowered. This causes an application of high voltage during a short discharge interval (T), so that the resistance ratio (Rdc/Rg) in relation to the resistance (Rg) of the air-fuel mixture along the shortest distance (1g) between the electrodes falls below 1. Accordingly, a discharge channel gradually widens downstream of the gas flow and the length of the discharge channel is extended. This extension of the gas channel contributes to an expansion of the flame kernel and a compression of the initial combustion period, allowing achievement of an effective ignition.
