Abstract:
To minimize reductions in reading accuracy and writing accuracy caused by an increase in gaps between components. A card reader 1 carries out a reading operation for reading magnetic data by scanning the magnetic data in a first direction F1, and a writing operation for writing magnetic data by scanning the magnetic data in a second direction F2. Prior to the writing operation and the reading operation, a head movement mechanism 8 carries out a preparatory operation in which a magnetic head 7 which is positioned in a head retraction position 7A is moved to a head abutting position 7B, and a preliminary operation in which the magnetic head 7 is moved slightly (e.g., around 1 mm) in the same scanning direction as the scanning direction when carrying out the reading operation and the writing operation. Even if there is an increase in looseness caused by wear through use or by gaps present in the design, resulting in an increase in no-load regions, carrying out the preliminary operation can eliminate no-load operation during the preliminary operation.
