Abstract:
An EGR system is provided, and an air intake passage is filled with an EGR gas when the internal combustion engine has temporarily stopped. When a prescribed restart condition is fulfilled after the internal combustion engine has stopped, an air intake shutter valve, which is provided in the air intake passage upstream of a point of connection with an EGR passage, is closed, the effective cross-sectional area of the air intake passage is reduced, and cranking of the internal combustion engine is started. The speed of the internal combustion engine increases after the start of cranking, and until the speed reaches a prescribed speed that is higher than before the start of cranking, cranking is continued and the air intake shutter valve remains closed. After the speed of the internal combustion engine has reached the prescribed speed, the air intake shutter valve is opened, a substantial amount of air is allowed into cylinders, and combustion is restarted.
