Abstract:
In order to reduce optical fiber loss, this method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform includes: a first step of producing a core preform having a first cladding layer which is constituted by a transparent glass core portion with fluorine added to the periphery thereof; and a second step of forming, on the periphery of the first cladding layer, a second cladding layer comprising glass having a refractive index higher than that of the first cladding layer. The first cladding layer has, at least near the boundary surface, a first refractive index profile shape formed by means of distributed fluorine concentration, in which a refractive index difference between the refractive index of the first cladding layer and the refractive index of the second cladding layer diminishes as the distance to the boundary surface between the first cladding layer and the second cladding layer decreases.
