Abstract:
Provided is a useful improvement typically in a method for manufacturing a CF-SMC from a continuous carbon fiber bundle having a large number of filaments such as a large tow. The method for manufacturing a SMC according to the present invention comprises (i) chopping a continuous carbon fiber bundle having a number of filaments of NK with a rotary cutter to produce chopped carbon fiber bundles, (ii) fragmenting the chopped carbon fiber bundles using a fragmentation processing device equipped with a rotating body, (iii) accumulating the fragmented chopped carbon fiber bundles on a carrier film that runs below the rotary cutter to form a carbon fiber mat, and (iv) impregnating the carbon fiber mat with a thermoplastic resin composition, in which N is 20 or greater and the fragmentation processing device is equipped with a first pin roller and a second pin roller each having a rotation axis that is parallel with the direction of a rotation axis of the rotary cutter.
