Abstract:
Disclosed are a method for reducing or inhibiting the modification of an N-linked sugar chain with fucose in a plant, a transgenic plant in which the fucose modification is reduced or inhibited, and others.  The amount of GDP-fucose in a plant cell can be reduced by inhibiting the transcription/translation of a gene encoding an enzyme involved in the synthesis of a sugar nucleotide GDP-fucose through posttranscriptional gene silencing (PTGS), virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) or transcriptional gene silencing (TGS).  In this manner, the modification of a sugar chain such as a glycoprotein sugar chain, a glycolipid sugar chain, an oligosaccharide or a polysaccharide with fucose is reduced or inhibited, thereby producing a glycoprotein or the like in which a fucose-modified part (which can act as an allergen) is removed.  It becomes possible to use a medical glycoprotein produced in a plant for clinical purposes.
