Abstract:
A novel method is provided by which carboxymethyl cellulose less apt to form lumps in water can be easily produced. When producing carboxymethyl cellulose having a degree of carboxymethyl substitution of 0.50 or higher, mercerization is conduced in a medium consisting mainly of water and thereafter carboxymethylation is conducted in a mixed medium comprising water and an organic solvent.
