Abstract:
The present invention provides a method for producing an optical element, said method being capable of suppressing alignment failure of a liquid crystal compound in a liquid crystal layer by enhancing the alignment properties of an alignment pattern of a photo-alignment film. This method for producing an optical element comprises: a light exposure step for providing a photo-alignment film, which contains a photo-alignment material, with an alignment pattern by subjecting the surface of the photo-alignment film to interference exposure, said alignment pattern changing the direction of an optical axis derived from a liquid crystal compound so that the direction of the optical axis is continuously rotated along at least one in-plane direction; and a liquid crystal layer formation step for forming a liquid crystal layer by applying a liquid crystal composition containing a liquid crystal compound onto the photo-alignment film that has been provided with the alignment pattern. With respect to this method for producing an optical element, the photo-alignment material contains an azo compound; and the light exposure step is carried out in an environment where the relative humidity is 50% or less.
