[Problem] To provide a method for producing a sol of surface-modified silica particles dispersed in an organic solvent which has excellent storage stability. [Solution] A method for producing a sol of surface-modified silica particles dispersed in an organic solvent, the method comprising the following steps (A) to (C). (A) A step for mixing a sol of surface-unmodified silica particles dispersed in an organic solvent with a silane coupling agent. (B) A step for adding a basic compound to the product obtained in the step (A). (C) A step for bringing a cation exchange resin into contact with the product obtained in the step (B).
