Abstract:
Provided is a method for producing a sterol. A sterol is produced by culturing a microorganism of the class Labyrinthulomycetes, which is capable of producing the sterol and has been modified so as to lower the activity of 24-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR24), 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7) or sterol 24-C-methyltransferase (SMT1), and then collecting the sterol from the culture.
