Provided is a monitoring system that can more reliably monitor vertical transportation devices. A monitoring system (16) for a vertical transportation device (1) comprises an event input unit (25), an image management unit (23), and an image output unit (24). The event input unit (25) receives a signal representing an external event from an external system (20). The external event is an event that occurs in the external system (20) outside the vertical transportation device (1). The image management unit (23) selects an image from among the images captured by the camera of the vertical transportation device (1), on the basis of the external event represented by the signal received by the event input unit (25). The image output unit (24) outputs, to an image storage unit (30), the image selected by the image management unit (23) among the images captured by the camera of the vertical transportation device (1). The image output unit (24) does not output, to the image storage unit (30), the images not selected by the image management unit (23) among the images captured by the camera of the vertical transportation device (1).
