The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a muffler which is capable of efficiently reducing noise with a simple configuration; and an air conditioner. The muffler (1) is provided with: a main body (2) which has a cylindrical shape that is long in the axial direction, the axial direction of said main body being arranged substantially parallel to the vertical direction during installation; an inlet pipe (3a) which passes through and is connected to an end of the main body (2) at one side in the axial direction, said end being positioned upwards during installation, and which has the tip end (3a) disposed inside the main body (2); and an outlet pipe (4) which is connected to an end of the main body (2) at another side in the axial direction opposite to the one side, said end being positioned downwards during installation, and which has the tip end (4a) disposed inside the main body (2). The diameters of the tip ends (3a, 4a) of the inlet pipe (3) and the outlet pipe (4) which are positioned inside the main body (2) are smaller than the diameters of parts which are connected to the main body (2).
