Abstract:
A fiber-optic laser (10) source capable of emitting multiple useful wavelengths at the same time, including multiple ITU grid wavelengths, is disclosed. The laser (10) preferably comprises a diode-pumped rare-earth doped fiber amplifier as gain medium, a periodic filter (110, 180) to define a first set of possible lasing wavelengths corresponding to ITU grid lasing wavelengths, and a resonant filter (120, 200) for defining a subset of the first set of wavelengths. The arrangement is enclosed in a ring resonator (10). The ring resonator (10) may be made, in part or in total, with polarization-maintaining optical fiber. The resonator (10) may also comprise in-line optical isolators (70, 80) to ensure unidirectional operation and to eliminate undesired reflections. A gain-flattening filter (60) may also be included in the resonator (10) depending on the desired output characteristics of the laser (10). The laser (10) may be designed to operate in a set of single cavity longitudinal modes. The disclosed laser (10) may also comprise output wavelength (161, 163) and/or power (210) definition and stabilization control.
