Abstract:
A multifocal system (900) has a polarization beam splitter (PBS) (910) to split an unpolarized light beam (905) into two orthogonally linearly-polarized (LP) light beams (911, 912). The two LP light beams (911, 912) are reflected by mirrors (951, 952) to travel in opposite directions and enter into a variable-focusing module (920) at two ends (921, 922) thereof, respectively. The module (920, 700) includes waveplates (720, 730) to convert the LP light beams into two circularly-polarized (CP) light beams at both ends of an optical assembly (724, 200). The optical assembly (724, 200) is formed with a stack of birefringent optical elements including at least one geometric phase lens and one polarization selector that may be electrically modulated to select the optical power in focusing the two CP light beams. Followed by the waveplates (720, 730) converting two focused CP light beams to two focused LP light beams (971, 972) and upon mirror reflection, the beams (971, 972) are finally recombined by the PBS (910) to form one focused light beam (906). Polarization-independent focusing is achieved by the multifocal system (900).
