Disclosed are a needle selection apparatus and method for a latch needle warp knitting machine. The needle selection apparatus comprises a needle bed (1). The needle bed (1) comprises a plurality of needle slots (7) arranged in row according size requirements. A latch needle (2) capable of moving up and down is provided in each needle slot (7). The latch needle (2) is provided with a needle heel. A cover plate (3) is mounted on the needle bed (1). Insertion slots (8) corresponding to the needle slots (7) are provided on the cover plate (3). A heel insertion member (4) capable of moving forward and backward is mounted in each insertion slot (8). Each heel insertion member (4) comprises an upper heel insertion member (4-1) and a lower heel insertion member (4-2). The needle heel is clamped between the upper heel insertion member (4-1) and the lower heel insertion member (4-2). A support member (5) is mounted under each latch needle (2). During knitting of the latch needle warp knitting machine using the apparatus, the height of each knitting needle can be adjusted according to process requirements, the types of the patterns of the warp knitted fabric with latch needles are enriched, and a large adjustment range and high selectivity are achieved.
