Abstract:
Provided is an optical element with which it is possible to convert both visible light and infrared light to a desired polarized-light state at a high intensity ratio (percentage) with respect to all emitted light. This optical element comprises: a reflective polarizer that reflects first linear polarized light in which an electrical field vibrates in a first direction, and that transmits second linear polarized light in which an electrical field vibrates in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction; and a phase difference film laminate provided to an incident-surface side of the reflective polarizer, the phase difference film laminate being formed by superposing two or three phase difference films. The phase difference film laminate converts incident circular polarized light for which the wavelength is in the visible band to the first linear polarized light, the percentage of the ratio of the intensity of the first linear polarized light to the intensity of all emitted light in the wavelength region of 430-650 nm being 65% or higher. The phase difference film laminate also converts incident infrared light in the infrared band to the second linear polarized light, the percentage of the ratio of the intensity of the second linear polarized light to that of all emitted light in the wavelength region of 850-950 nm being 65% or higher.
