Abstract:
This optical element comprises a transparent base material, an alignment layer that is formed on the transparent base material, and a liquid crystal layer that is formed on the alignment layer. A surface of the alignment layer, said surface being in contact with the liquid crystal layer, is provided with a plurality of grooves which are parallel to each other and align the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer. The pitch of the grooves is from 10 nm to 600 nm. The alignment layer is composed of a copolymer of an energy curable composition; and the surface of the alignment layer contains elemental fluorine.
