Abstract:
This optical system is provided with: a first optical system that has a polarization conversion element for aligning the polarization direction of light including a plurality of colored light beams with a predetermined polarization direction, and generates illumination light including the plurality of colored light beams; a first polarization rotation element that is disposed at a first pupil position within the first optical system, and includes a first divided region and a second divided region, the first divided region and the second divided region having polarization characteristics different from each other with respect to a first colored light beam among the plurality of colored light beams emitted from the polarization conversion element; a polarizer that is disposed between the polarization conversion element and the first polarization rotation element within the first optical system, and reduces light in a polarization direction other than the predetermined polarization direction included in the light emitted from the polarization conversion element; and a plurality of light valves that are each illuminated by at least the first colored light beam among the plurality of colored light beams included in the illumination light generated by the first optical system.
