Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing: an optically anisotropic layer which enables the production of an image display device with excellent contrast; an optical film which comprises this optically anisotropic layer; a polarizing plate; and an image display device. An optically anisotropic layer according to the present invention is obtained by curing a polymerizable liquid crystal composition that contains a polymerizable liquid crystal compound having normal wavelength dispersion properties and a monofunctional compound and by immobilizing the alignment state of the polymerizable liquid crystal compound; the polymerizable liquid crystal compound has polymerizable groups P1 and P2, which respectively constitute one end and the other end, and three or more rings B1 which are selected from the group consisting of aromatic rings and aliphatic rings; the monofunctional compound has a polymerizable group P3 which is polymerizable with a liquid crystal compound and constitutes one end, an optionally substituted aromatic ring Ar which constitutes the other end, and a ring B2 which is selected from the group consisting of aromatic rings and aliphatic rings; the number a1 of atoms of the polymerizable liquid crystal compound and the number a2 of atoms of the monofunctional compound satisfy relational expression (1); the number b1 of the rings B1 in the polymerizable liquid crystal compound and the sum b2 of the aromatic rings Ar and the rings B2 in the monofunctional compound satisfy relational expression (2); and the X-ray diffractometry thereof shows a diffraction peak assigned to a periodic structure.
