Abstract:
The present invention address the issue of providing: an optically anisotropic layer that can produce an image display device having excellent contrast; and an optical film, polarizing plate, and image display device having the optically anisotropic layer. This optically anisotropic layer is formed by: hardening a polymerizable liquid crystal composition that includes a monofunctional compound and a rod-shaped liquid crystal compound that has an inverse wavelength distribution; and fixing the orientation of the rod-shaped liquid crystal compound. The rod-shaped liquid crystal compound has two polymerizable groups P1 and P2 and at least three rings B1 selected from a group consisting of aromatic rings and alicyclic rings. The monofunctional compound has a polymerizable group P3 that can be polymerized with the rod-shaped liquid crystal compound, an aromatic ring Ar, and at least one ring B2 selected from the group consisting of aromatic rings and alicyclic rings. The atomic number a1 for the rod-shaped liquid crystal compound and the atomic number a2 for the monofunctional compound fulfill the relationship in formula (1). The number b1 of rings B1 in the rod-shaped liquid crystal compound and the total number b2 of aromatic rings Ar and rings B2 in the monofunctional compound fulfill formula (2). The optically anisotropic layer has a diffraction peak derived from a periodic structure, in X-ray diffraction measurement. Formula (1): 0.2 < a2/ a1 < 0.55 Formula (2): b2 = b1 × 0.5 or b2 = (b1 + 1) × 0.5
