Abstract:
An oral care implement having electrodes thereon. In one aspect, the oral care implement may include a handle and a head, the head having an exposed outer surface. A first depression is formed in the exposed outer surface of the head. A first sacrificial electrode is disposed within the first depression and has an exposed surface that is recessed relative to the exposed outer surface of the head. A second electrode is located on the head. Each of the first and second electrodes is operably coupled to a power source to have opposite electrical charges.

Claims:
CLAIMS

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:

1. An oral care implement comprising: a handle; a head coupled to the handle, the head having an exposed outer surface; a first depression formed in the exposed outer surface of the head; a first sacrificial electrode disposed within the first depression and having an exposed surface that is recessed relative to the exposed outer surface of the head; a second electrode on the head, and each of the first and second electrodes operablv coupled to a power source to have opposite electrical charges.

2. The oral care implement according to claim 1 further comprising: the first depression having a first width; and the exposed surface of the first sacrificial electrode recessed a first depth from the exposed outer surface, the first depth being greater than or equal to the first width.

3. The oral care implement according to claim 2 wherein the first depth is greater than the first width,

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the first depression is a first elongated groove that extends along a first groove axis, the first elongated groove defined by opposing upstanding sidewalls and a floor comprised of the exposed surface of the first sacrificial electrode.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 1 to 4 further comprising: a second depression formed in the exposed outer surface of the head, and the second electrode disposed within the second depression and having an exposed surface that is recessed relative to the exposed outer surface of the head.

6. The oral care implement according to claim 5 wherein the second electrode is a second sacrificial electrode.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 5 to 6 further comprising: the second depression having a second width, the exposed surface of the second sacrificial electrode recessed a second depth from the exposed outer surface, the second depth being greater than or equal to the second width.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 5 to 7 wherein the second depression is a second elongated groove that extends along a second groove axis, the second elongated groove defined by opposing upstanding sidewails and a floor comprised of the exposed surface of the second electrode.

9. The oral care implement according to claim 8 wherein the head extends along a longitudinal axis from a proximal end adjacent a neck of the oral care implement to a distal end, and wherein each of the first and second groove axes extend substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

10. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 8 to 9 wherein each of the first and second elongated grooves extend from a first open end to a second open end, 1. The oral care implement according to claim 10 further comprising a plurality of the first electrodes and a plurality of the second electrodes; and wherein the first and second electrodes are disposed on the head in an alternating arrangement.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 5 to 8 wherein the head extends along a longitudinal axis from a proximal end adjacent a neck of the oral care implement to a distal end, the first sacrificial electrode and the second electrode located on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis.

The oral care implement according to claim 12 wherein the exposed outer surface of the head comprises a front surface, a rear surface opposite the front surface, and a side surface extending between the front and rear surfaces, the side surface of the head comprising a first portion located on a first side of the longitudinal axis and a second portion located on a second side of the longitudinal axis, and wherein the first depression is located on the first portion of the side surface of the head and the second depression is located on the second portion of the side surface of the head.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 12 to 13 further comprising an eiastomeric soft tissue cleanser located on the head between the first and second electrodes.

The oral care implement according to claim 1 wherein the exposed outer surface of the head comprises a front surface, a rear surface opposite the front surface, and a side surface extending between the front and rear surfaces; and wherein the first electrode is at least partially located on the front surface of the head and the second electrode is at least partially located on the rear surface of the head.

The oral care implement according to claim 15 wherein the head extends from a proximal end to a distal end along a longitudinal axis, the first electrode extending across the front surface of the head transversely to the longitudinal axis and the second electrode extending across the rear surface of the head transversely to the longitudinal axis, a portion of each of the first and second electrodes extending onto the side surface of the head with the first and second electrodes spaced apart in a longitudinal direction.

The oral care implement according to claim 16 wherein the portions of the first and second electrodes at least partially overlap on the side surface of the head so that a reference plane parallel to the front surface of the head intersects the portions of each of the first and second electrodes.

The oral care implement according to claim 17 further comprising: a plurality of the first electrodes located on the front surface of the head in a spaced apart manner, each of the plurality of first electrodes being elongated in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis; a plurality of the second electrodes located on the rear surface of the head in a spaced apart manner, each of the plurality of second electrodes being elongated in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis; and wherein each of the plurality of first and second electrodes comprises a portion that extends onto the side surface of the head, the portions of the first and second electrodes at least partially overlapping so as to be intersected by the reference plane; and wherein the portions of the plurality of first and second electrodes extend onto the side surface of the head in an alternating arrangement.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 1 to 18 further comprising: a tooth cleaning element field extending from the exposed outer surface of the head and comprising a distal-most cleaning element and a proximal-most cleaning element; wherein the head extends along a longitudinal axis from a proximal end of the head to a distal end of the head; and wherein the first sacrificial electrode is located on a transverse reference plane located between the proximal-most and distal-most tooth cleaning elements.

20. An oral care implement comprising: a handle; a head coupled to the handle, the head having an exposed outer surface, a first electrode and a second electrode located on the head, at least one of the first and second electrodes being a sacrificial electrode; each of the first and second electrodes operably coupled to a power source to have opposite electrical charges; wherein each of the first and second electrodes has an exposed surface that is either recessed relative to the exposed outer surface of the head or covered by a cover member.

21. The oral care implement according to claim 20 wherein the cover member is permeable to liquid.

22. An oral care implement comprising: a handle; a head coupled to the handle, the head having a front surface and a rear surface opposite the front surface; a plurality of tooth cleaning elements extending from the front surface of the head; a soft tissue cleaner on the rear surface of the head, the soft tissue cleaner comprising a protuberance field; and a first electrode and a second electrode each operably coupled to a power source, the first and second electrodes spaced apart from one another and substantially surrounding the protuberance field.

The oral care implement according to claim 22 wherein the first and second electrodes are located at least partially on the rear surface of the head.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 22 to 23 wherein the head further comprises a side surface extending between the front and rear surfaces, and wherein each of the first and second electrodes is at least partially located on the side surface of the head.

The oral care implement according to claim any one of claims 22 to 24 wherein the head extends from a proximal end to a distal end along a longitudinal axis, and wherein the first electrode is located on a first side of the longitudinal axis and the second electrode is located on a second side of the longitudinal axis.

The oral care implement according to claim 25 wherein the first and second electrodes are spaced apart by a first gap located on the longitudinal axis at the proximal end of the head and a second gap located on the longitudinal axis at the distal end of the head.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 22 to 26 wherein the soft tissue cleaner is formed of an eiastomeric material and comprises a pad portion located on the rear surface of the head and a plurality of protuberances extending from the pad portion and forming the protuberance field.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 22 to 27 wherein the soft tissue cleaner is spaced apart from each of the first and second electrodes.

The oral care implement according to claim 28 wherein the head comprises an outer surface that comprises the front surface, the rear surface, and a side surface extending between the front and rear surfaces, and wherein a portion of the outer surface of the head separates each of the first and second electrodes from the soft tissue cleaner.

30. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 22 to 29 wherein the protuberance field extends from a first end to a second end along a longitudinal axis of the head, and wherein the first and second electrodes extend axially beyond the first and second ends of the protuberance field.

3 1. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 22 to 30 wherein at least one of the first and second electrodes is a sacrificial electrode,

32. The oral care implement according to claim 31 wherein each of the first and second electrodes is disposed within a depression in the head so that an exposed surface of the first and second electrodes are recessed relative to an exposed outer surface of the head.

33. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 22 to 32 wherein one of the first and second electrodes is an anode and the other of the first and second electrodes is a cathode,

34. An oral care implement comprising: a handle; a head coupled to the handle, the head having a front surface and a rear surface opposite the front surface; a plurality of tooth cleaning elements extending from the front surface of the head; a soft tissue cleaner positioned on the rear surface of the head, the soft tissue cleaner comprising a protuberance field; a first electrode and a second electrode each operably coupled to a power source and located at least partially within the protuberance field of the soft tissue cleaner, and wherein at least one of the first and second electrodes is a sacrificial electrode.

35. The oral care implement according to claim 34 wherein the soft tissue cleaner is formed of an elastomeric material and comprises a pad portion located on the rear surface of the head and a plurality of protuberances extending from an upper surface of the pad portion and forming the protuberance field.

36. The oral care implement according to claim 35 wherein the first and second electrodes are embedded within the pad portion of the soft tissue cleaner.

37. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 35 to 36 wherein an exposed outer surface of the first and second electrodes i s flush with the upper surface of the pad portion of the soft tissue cleaner.

38. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 35 to 36 wherein an exposed outer surface of the first and second electrodes is recessed relative to the upper surface of the pad portion of the soft tissue cleaner.

39. The oral care implement according to claim 35 wherein the first and second electrodes are located atop the upper surface of the pad portion so that an exposed outer surface of each of the first and second electrodes is recessed relative to distal tips of the plurality of protuberances.

40. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 34 to 39 wherein the first and second electrodes are surrounded by protuberances of the protuberance field.

41. An oral care implement comprising: a handle; a head coupled to the handle, the head having a front surface and a rear surface opposite the front surface; a plurality of tooth cleaning elements extending from the front surface of the head, a soft tissue cleaner formed of an elastomeric material positioned on the rear surface of the head, and a first electrode and a second electrode each operably coupled to a power source, at least one of the first and second electrodes embedded within the elastorneric material of the soft tissue cleaner.

42. The oral care implement according to claim 41 wherein at least one of the first and second electrodes is a sacrificial electrode.

43. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 41 to 42 wherein an exposed outer surface of the at least one of the first and second electrodes that is embedded within the elastorneric material of the soft tissue cleaner is recessed relative to an outer surface of the soft tissue cleaner.

44. An oral care implement comprising: a handle; a head coupled to the handle and extending from a proximal end to a distal end along a longitudinal axis, the head comprising a front surface, a rear surface opposite the front surface, and a side surface extending between the front and rear surfaces; a transverse through-hole extending from a first opening in the side surface of the head to a second opening in the side surface of the head, the transverse through-hole forming a passageway through the head, the passageway being defined by an upper surface and a lower surface; a first electrode and a second electrode operably coupled to a power source and located on the head, and wherein the first electrode is located on one of the upper and lower surfaces of the passageway so that an exposed outer surface of the first electrode faces the passageway.

45. The oral care implement according to claim 44 wherein at least one of the first and second electrodes is a sacrificial electrode.

46. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 44 to 45 wherein the first electrode comprises an exposed outer surface that is recessed relative to the one of the upper and lower surfaces of the passageway on which it is located.

47. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 44 to 46 wherein the first electrode is located on the upper surface of the passageway and the second electrode is located on the lower surface of the passageway so that the first and second electrodes face one another within the passageway.

48. The oral care implement according to claim 47 wherein the first electrode has an exposed surface that is recessed relative to the upper surface of the passageway and the second electrode has an exposed surface that is recessed relative to the lower surface of the passageway,

The oral care implement according to claim 47 wherein the first electrode comprises a first portion that is exposed within the passageway and a second portion that is exposed on the front surface of the head, and wherein the second electrode comprises a first portion that is exposed within the passageway and a second portion that is exposed on the rear surface of the head.

50. The oral care implement according to claim 48 wherein the second portion of the first electrode is recessed relative to the front surface of the head and wherein the second portion of the second electrode is recessed relative to the rear surface of the head.

51. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 47 to 50 wherein the first and second electrodes are axially offset such that a plane that is perpendicular to the front surface of the head and to the longitudinal axis intersects one of the first and second eiectrodes without intersecting the other one of the first and second electrodes.

52. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 44 to 51 wherein the side surface of the head comprises a first lateral portion, a second lateral portion, and a distal portion extending between the first and second lateral portions, and wherein the first opening of the transverse through-hole is located on the first lateral portion of the side surface of the head and the second opening of the transverse through-hole is located on the second lateral portion of the side surface of the head.

53. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 44 to 52 further comprising a plurality of tooth cleaning elements extending from the front surface of the head.

54. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 44 to 53 wherein one of the first and second electrodes is a cathode and the other of the first and second electrodes is an anode,

55. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 44 to 54 further comprising a plurality of the first electrodes located on the upper surface of the passageway and a plurality of the second electrodes located on the lower surface of the passageway.

56. The oral care implement according to claim 55 wherein each of the first and second electrodes extend across the head in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis, each of the first electrodes being spaced apart from one another in an axial direction and each of the second electrodes being spaced apart from one another in the axial direction.

57. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 44 to 56 wherein the passageway extends from the first opening to the second opening along an axis that is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the head.

58. An oral care implement comprising; a handle; a head coupled to the handle and comprising a front surface, a rear surface opposite the front surface, and first and second lateral surfaces extending between the front and rear surfaces; a plurality of tooth cleaning elements extending from the front surface of the head; a through-hole formed through the head from the first lateral surface of the head to the second lateral surface of the head, the through-hole being defined by an upper surface and a lower surface; a first electrode operably coupled to a power source and located on the upper surface of the through-hole; and a second electrode operably coupled to the power source and located on the lower surface of the through-hole. The oral care implement according to claim 58 wherein at least one of the first and second electrodes is a sacrificial electrode.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 58 to 59 wherein one of the first and second electrodes is an anode and the other of the first and second electrodes is a cathode.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 58 to 60 wherein the first electrode has an exposed surface that is recessed relative to the upper surface of the through-hole and the second electrode has an exposed surface that is recessed relative to the lower surface of the through-hole, the exposed surfaces of the first and second electrodes facing one another within the through-hole.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 58 to 61 where the head extends from a proximal end to a distal end along a longitudinal axis, and wherein the first and second electrodes are axially offset with one another along the longitudinal axis, each of the first and second electrodes being elongated in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis.

An oral care implement comprising: a handle, a head coupled to the handle and comprising an outer surface; a plurality of tooth cleaning elements extending from the head; at least one oral care agent dispenser located on the head; a first electrode and a second electrode operably coupled to a power source to have opposite electrical charges, the first and second electrodes positioned on the head; and wherein at least one of the first and second electrodes is a sacrifi cial electrode.

The oral care implement according to claim 63 wherein the first electrode is positioned on a first side of the oral care agent dispenser and the second electrode is positioned on a second side of the oral care agent dispenser.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 63 to 64 wherein the first and second electrodes are spaced apart from one another thereby defining a pathway along the outer surface of the head between the first and second electrodes, and wherein the oral care agent dispenser is located within the pathway between the first and second electrodes,

66. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 63 to 65 wherein the first and second electrodes collectively substantially surround the oral care agent dispenser.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 63 to 66 wherein the outer surface of the head comprises a front surface and an opposite rear surface, and wherein the tooth cleaning elements extend from the front surface of the head and the oral care agent dispenser and the first and second electrodes are located on the rear surface of the head.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 63 to 66 wherein the outer surface of the head comprises a front surface and an opposite rear surface, and wherein the plurality of tooth cleaning elements extend from the front surface of the head and the oral care agent dispenser is located on the front surface of the head.

69. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 63 to 68 wherein the oral care agent dispenser comprises at least one solid release polymer positioned on the outer surface of the head, the solid release polymer comprising an oral care agent.

The oral care implement according to claim 69 wherein the oral care agent dispenser comprises a plurality of solid release polymers and further comprising a plurality of the first electrodes and a plurality of the second electrodes each operably coupled to the power source to have opposite electrical charges, and wherein each of the solid release polymers is at least partially surrounded by one of the first electrodes and one of the second electrodes.

71. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 63 to 68 further comprising a reservoir for storing an oral care agent, and wherein the oral care agent dispenser comprises an outlet on the outer surface of the head that is fluidly coupled to the oral care agent in the reservoir.

The oral care implement according to any one of claims 63 to 68 further comprising a reservoir for storing an oral care agent, and wherein the at least one oral care agent dispenser comprises a first oral care agent dispenser comprising a solid release polymer and a second oral care agent dispenser comprising an outlet that is fluidiy coupled to the oral care agent in the reservoir.

The oral care implement according to claim 72 wherein the outer surface of the head comprises a front surface and an opposite rear surface, and wherein the plurality of tooth cleaning elements extend from the front surface of the head and the first and second oral care agent dispensers are located on the rear surface of the head.

74. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 63 to 73 wherein each of the first and second electrodes has an exposed surface that is recessed relative to the outer surface of the head.

75. The oral care impl ement according to any one of claims 63 to 74 wherein each of the first and second electrodes comprises a curved section located adjacent to the oral care agent dispenser.

76. An oral care implement comprising: a handle, a head coupled to the handle and having a first surface and an opposite second surface; a plurality of tooth cleaning elements extending from the first surface of the head; at least one oral care agent dispenser located on the second surface of the head, and a first electrode and a second electrode operably coupled to a power source to have opposite electrical charges, the first and second electrodes positioned on the second surface of the head.

77. The oral care implement according to claim 76 wherein the oral care agent dispenser comprises at least one solid release polymer positioned on the second surface of the head, the solid release polymer comprising an oral care agent.

78. The oral care implement according to claim 76 further comprising a reservoir for storing an oral care agent, and wherein the oral care agent dispenser comprises an outlet on the second surface of the head that is fluidly coupled to the oral care agent in the reservoir,

The oral care implement according to claim 76 further comprising a reservoir for storing an oral care agent, and wherein the at least one oral care agent dispenser comprises a first oral care agent dispenser comprising a solid release polymer and a second oral care agent dispenser comprising an outlet that is fluidly coupled to the oral care agent in the reservoir.

80. The oral care implement according to any one of claims 76 to 79 wherein each of the first and second electrodes has an exposed surface that is recessed relative to the second surface of the head,

Description:
ORAL CARE IMPLEMENT

[0001] Toothbrushes are used to clean a person's oral cavity including the teeth and gums. Typically, dentifrice is placed on the bristles of the toothbrush to act as a cleaning agent. However, dentifrice is not always available and when it is available it is not always sufficient for cleaning. Recent developments in toothbrush and dentifrice manufacture have attempted to find better mechanisms to enhance the cleaning result during toothbrushing. Thus, there is a continuing need to develop oral care implements such as toothbrushes that have an increased cleaning potential in a wide range of environments.

[0002] The present invention is directed to an oral care implement having electrodes thereon. In one aspect, at least one of the electrodes may be a sacrificial electrode. The electrodes may be recessed relative to an exposed surface of the oral care implement body. The electrodes may be positioned around or within a soft tissue cleaner. The oral care implement may include a head having a through-hole, and the electrodes may be positioned on an upper and/or lower surface of the through-hole. The oral care implement may also include an oral care agent dispenser such that the electrodes are positioned near or adjacent to the oral care agent dispenser. The oral care agent dispenser may be a solid release polymer or an outlet that is coupled to a reservoir containing an oral care agent.

To provide optimum comfort as well as cleaning benefits, the elastomeric material of the tooth or soft tissue engaging elements has a hardness property in the range of A8 to A25 Shore hardness. One suitable elastomeric material is styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS) manufactured by GLS Corporation. Nevertheless, SEBS material from other manufacturers or other materials within and outside the noted hardness range could be used.

For example, staples/anchors, in-mold tufting (IMT) or anchor free tufting (AFT) could be used to mount the cleaning elements/tooth engaging elements. The controller may also include a timing mechanism, such that the electrodes 210, 220 are activated for a predetermined time, for example.

In this example, the zinc ions are released from at least one of the first and second electrodes 210, 220 (whichever is a sacrificial electrode) and into the user's oral cavity to provide the user with anti -bacterial benefits. In some embodiments the sacrificial electrode may be formed entirely from the sacrificial metal, whereas in other embodiments the sacrificial electrode may be plated with the sacrificial metal.

In other implementations, for example, the sacrificial electrode may include different metals that can be oxidized to provide ions that give alternative oral benefits. Thus, combinations of electrodes including zinc, tin, iron, manganese, or the like may be used on the oral care implement 100.

[0064] The exemplar}' embodiments shown in the drawings and described herein illustrate example devices related to oral health that incorporate electrodes. In certain embodiments, at least one of the electrodes is a sacrificial electrode, made of a sacrificial metal. For example, the sacrificial electrode may be made of zinc, which may be 90% or more pure zinc. When an electrical potential is produced across the electrodes, zinc ions are released into an electrolyte, which may be saliva, water, or a dentifrice. In embodiments of this disclosure, the electrolyte is then transferred to the oral cavity to provide a benefit to the oral cavity. For example, when zinc is used as the sacrificial metal, the electrolytic fluid will carry zinc ions, which act as an antibacterial agent in the oral cavity. Other sacrificial metals, such as iron, or tin, may also or alternatively be used, to provide other or additional oral benefits. When the electrolyte used is a dentifrice solution, such as a mouthwash or tooth whitening agent, the electrodes may also act to activate components in the dentifrice. The zinc or other ions may enhance already existing products, including those whose original purpose may have been other than therapeutic. The oral care implement 100 may in some embodiments include sacrificial eiectrodes comprising zinc and sacrificial electrodes including one or more of tin, iron, manganese, or the like to provide a user with multiple benefits.
