This organic electroluminescent element is provided with a supporting substrate (1), a sealing substrate (2), and an organic light emitting body (3) that is disposed between the supporting substrate (1) and the sealing substrate (2). The organic electroluminescent element is provided with side conductive sections (4), which are electrically connected to an electrode of the organic light emitting body (3), and which extend in the thickness direction of the sealing substrate (2), said side conductive sections being on the sides of the sealing substrate (2). The organic electroluminescent element is provided with insulating sheets (5), which are disposed on the sides of the supporting substrate (1), and which extend in the thickness direction of the sealing substrate (2), said insulating sheets being on the sides of the sealing substrate (2). The organic electroluminescent element is provided with parts where the sealing substrate (2) and the insulating sheets (5) are being spaced apart from each other.
