1. | A pelmet with a covering consisting of a facing removably secured to it is generally indicated by reference numeral 1 in figure 1. The peimet (2) consist of a front member (3), an upper member and a lower member extending as rearward flanges (4) and (5). |
2. | The upper fiange (4) has a operatively upper surface (4a) and lower surface (4b), the front member (3) operatively front surface (3a) and rear surface (3b), and the lower flange (5) has an operatively lower surface (5a) and upper surface (5b). |
3. | T he pelmet (2) is secured to a wall (6) by means of supporting brackets (7), which are secured to rear surface (3b) of the front member (3) as will be described in more detail further on in the specification. |
4. | As can be seen from figure 1 and 2, the pelmet (2) has a apertures (8) in the upper flange (4) and a iower flange (5) that extend to the rear edges (9) and (10) thereof. |
5. | The pelmet (2) is covered is coverd with a facing fabric (11) chosen to match the decorating theme of the room. The fabric (11) covers the pelmet (2) in a stretched condition to provide a smooth surface. |
6. | As shown in figure 2, the fabric (11) has buttonlike discs (i2) sewn onto the edges thereof. The discs (12) are sewn onto the fabric (11) with thread (13) to space the discs (12) from the fabric (by about the same distance as the thickness of the upper flange (4) and the lower flange (5) respectively. |
7. | The discs (12) are located through the upper flange (4) apertures (8a) first and the fabric then drawn over the front of the pelmet and the flange enables the discs (12) to be located through the lower flange (5) apertures (8b) The thread (13) of each disc (12) extends through an aperture (8a, 8b) to position the discs (12) underneath the upper flange (4), and above the lower flange (5) respectively. This releasably secures the fabric (11) to the pelmet (2). |
8. | The fabric (11) need not aiways have discs (12) sewn onto the lower end of the fabric to secure in apertures (8b). |
9. | The fabric (11) covering the pelmet (2) could be made up of several different pieces, all having discs (12) sewn onto the different pieces making up the various ornamentations. |
10. | A drapery (14) can be secured to the pelmet (2) in similar manner to partly cover the pelmet (2). The upper edge (15) of the drapery (14) also have discs (16) sewn onto it and these discs (16) can also be located underneath the upper flange (4) at the apertures (8a). in this case, the drapery (14) is secured to the pelmet (2) under its own weight, which is sufficient to retain the discs (16) in position under the upper flange (4). |
11. | Detail of the securing of the pelmet (2) to the wall (6) is shown in figure 2 and 3. The pelmet (2) has a rearwardly extending ciip component (15) that is associated with a supporting bracket (16). The clip component (15) is formed as part of the flange (4) and has a siot (17) that extends the length of the pelmet (2). |
12. | The bracket (16) has a complementary clip component (18) at one end thereof that is resitientty engageable with the pelmet clip (15) from the rear opening (19). Alternatively, the bracket clip (18) may be slidably engaged in the slot (17) from one or other end. |
13. | This enables the peimet (2) to be easily secured to the bracket (16). Removal of the pelmet (2) is simply a matter of compressing the bracket clip (18) to disengage it from the slot. (17). |
14. | Because the slot (17) extends for the length of the pelmet, (2) it may be secured in different positions on the bracket (16). |
15. | At the end opposite the clip (18), the bracket (16) has a member (20) that is slidably receivable in a wall mounting (21). The wall mounting (21) is securable to the wall (6) in any conventional manner. Ii will be understood that the abovedescribed embodiment is only as an example of a pelmet and drapery according to the invention. |
16. | The apertures in the pelmet upper flange can be slots that do not extend to the rear edge of the pelmet upper flange. The discs will be then located in the apertures by threading the disc edge on through the slot and then locating it flat against the upper flange lower surface around the slot. |
17. | It is also possible to secure a length of wire that is shaped to a desired pattern to the pelmet beneath a drapery or pelmet facing fabric. This will impart a pattern of folds to the drapery or the pelmet or the fabric facing that has aesthetic appeal. |
18. | it is further possible to have more then one pelmet on one wall mounting. This will enable one pelmet to have a facing or drapery or both, and the other peimet can carry a curtain rail with a curtain secured to it. |
19. | it is also further possible to have different shapes, as shown in figure 7, made of sponge, styrofoam or other materials placed on the front face of the pelmet with an adhesive. Placing the fabric over the shaped materials, allowing a larger variety of designs. |
20. | There are different combinations of the brackets, as shown in figure 4, To hold the pelmet with the clip, one way from the rear wall bracket (7), it is also tuther possible to suspend the pelmet from the ceiling with ceiiing brackets (7a) mounted onto the ceiling, also further using side brackets (7b) will allow the pelmet being used from one end of the side wall to the other end, these same brackets (7b) can futher be used in the inside of a window wail area, as shown in figure 5. |
21. | The invention, not only does it allow pelmets for window covering, but the pelmet could also be used to hang and display of tapestry, rugs and wall carpets and other artistic designed materials, allowing wider use for the pelmet, by adding the fabric with discs onto the items to be displayed onto the pelmet. |
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION Pelmets are used to conceal curtain rails in a decorative manner.
The pelmet is usually secured Jo wall with brackets that position the pelmet in front and above the curtain rail.
Some pelmets include fabric covering as a facing to the normally visually exposed surface or as a drapery extending over the pelmet. Both forms of ornamentation are prone to the collection of dirt while are also heavy and require secure fixing to the pelmet. This fixing is generally of a sufficiently permanent nature that does not lend itself to simple removal and replacement as desirable to enable a drapery or facing to be cleaned or replaced or both.
Further more draperies with pelmets are more often custom made and installed by the supplier of such draperies.
Pelmets covering is more often prepared at workshops and assembled in the same method of uphoistery covering of lounge suites,. using adhesive materiais and stapies to fix onto the pelmet.
