Description:
Piece of furniture and method for manufacture thereof

The present invention relates to pieces of furniture, such as cabinets.

Many types of furniture are known in practice. A problem occurs with known furniture when it is placed against a sloping wall, such as the sloping ceiling of an attic room. Placing of known furniture against a sloping wall is only possible at one distance relative to this wall.

An object of the invention is to obviate or reduce the above stated problem and to provide a piece of furniture which can be positioned in flexible manner relative to a sloping wall.

This object is achieved with the piece of furniture for placing against a sloping wall according to the invention, the piece of furniture comprising:

- a frame;

- a rear wall coupled to the frame for displacement in vertical direction; and

- locking means for locking the rear wall in a determined vertical position relative to a frame.

The rear wall is for instance a panel, plate or plank. The displaceable wall is preferably situated on the rear side of the piece of furniture, but it is for instance also possible to provide it on the front side.

The space behind the piece of furniture, i.e. the space enclosed by furniture and sloping wall, preferably functions as storage space. An additional problem with known furniture is that, because the distance to the sloping wall is fixed, the volume of the enclosed space is hereby also determined. This volume is determined by the height of the furniture and the angle of the sloping wall. This volume can therefore only be adjusted by modifying the piece of furniture, for instance by sawing a part off the upper side.

With the invention this problem is also obviated, or in any case alleviated. The invention therefore provides a piece of furniture with which a storage space can be created in efficient manner at a sloping wall.

The piece of furniture is for instance a cupboard, wherein the frame is formed by two substantially vertical side walls which are placed opposite each other and connected by a substantially horizontal wall on the upper side.

The piece of furniture can also be for instance a partition wall, a slide-out bed or a shelf system.

Because the rear wall is displaceable in vertical direction relative to the frame, the height of the piece of furniture can be adjusted. The size of the space enclosed by the piece of furniture and the wall can hereby be adjusted. A storage space of desired size can hereby be created in effective manner.

Because the displaceable rear wall is placed against the sloping wall, the storage space behind the piece of furniture is closed off to dust. The possibility of items placed on the furniture falling behind the furniture is also prevented. It is possible here to envisage for instance a pen which can roll behind a piece of furniture.

A further advantage is that the piece of furniture can be adjusted to the relevant sloping wall. The size of the storage space behind the furniture does not hereby depend, or hardly so, on the angle of inclination of the sloping wall against which the furniture is placed.

This avoids the piece of furniture having to be made to size for a specific sloping wall. This moreover enables simple (mass) production of the furniture.

A number of preferably modular pieces of furniture according to the invention of different heights can moreover be placed adjacently of each other without coming to lie at different distances relative to the sloping wall. The pieces of furniture can be placed in one line, whereby the storage space behind the furniture is wholly closed off. The pieces of furniture form a closed entity. This has the additional advantage that the whole has a finished and attractive appearance. The piece of furniture can for instance be a walk-in closet, wherein the rear side of this closet is open. The storage space behind the piece of furniture can hereby be accessed via the walk-in closet.

A further advantage of the piece of furniture according to the invention is that it is possible to use drawers of differing depth .

In a currently preferred embodiment the rear wall is the only part of the piece of furniture which is displaceable in vertical direction relative to the frame.

In a preferred embodiment according to the invention the locking means can be unlocked.

This achieves that the position of the rear wall relative to the frame is adjustable. This has the advantage that the piece of furniture can be placed at a greater distance from the sloping wall when more storage space is reguired, wherein the displaceable rear wall is displaced upward so that a closed storage space is once again created. The storage space can be made respectively larger or smaller as desired, which can be repeated without limit. The pieces of furniture are moreover reusable, for instance in the case of moving house. The use of the furniture according to the invention is after all not limited to one specific sloping wall but, owing to the adjustability of the displaceable rear wall, the piece of furniture according to the invention can be applied with any sloping wall.

The rear wall of the piece of furniture according to the invention is preferably continuously adjustable. Because the rear wall is continuously adjustable, the piece of furniture can be optimally adapted to any dimensioning and can be modified to great extent to satisfy conditions and/or preferences.

In a preferred embodiment according to the invention the rear wall comprises a flexible strip on its upper side.

The flexible strip achieves an effective closure of the storage space behind the furniture when it is placed against a sloping wall . The strip can be defined as a sealing strip . Because the strip is flexible it can curve together with the inclination of the wall and clearances in the sloping wall can be compensated. The storage space is hereby almost fully closed off from dust and/or moisture.

The flexible strip is for instance manufactured from rubber or plastic, such as PVC, or a combination thereof.

The strip preferably runs along the whole upper side of the rear wall. An optimal closure of the storage space behind the piece of furniture is in this way obtained when the piece of furniture is placed against a sloping wall.

In a preferred embodiment according to the invention the strip is connected to a mounting part with a substantially U-shaped cross-section. The strip and the mounting part are preferably formed integrally.

The U-shaped mounting part is placed over the upper side of the rear wall. The flexible strip is hereby mounted on the rear wall. This mounting enables easy replacement of the strip should this be desired.

In a preferred embodiment according to the present invention the piece of furniture comprises a slide-out drawer. The slide-out drawer preferably has a depth greater than the depth of the frame.

The piece of furniture is for instance a cabinet provided with a slide-out drawer. In the case the drawer is deeper than the depth of the cabinet the drawer can be moved into a position in which it is situated partly behind the rear side of the cabinet, i.e. in use the slide-out drawer can be pushed through into the storage space behind the cupboard. Objects can hereby be easily stored in the storage space by being placed in the drawer, and they can be retrieved from the storage space in simple manner by sliding out the drawer.

In another embodiment the drawer is a bed, whereby a slide-out bed is obtained. In the stowed position of the slide-out bed the bed is situated behind the piece of furniture, i.e. in the storage space. When the bed is needed, it is slid wholly or partially out of the storage space. In a preferred embodiment according to the invention the piece of furniture comprises a hook which extends behind the frame. It is emphasised that this is an optional addition to the piece of furniture.

Clothes can for instance be hung from the hook. Because the hook extends behind the frame, objects can be hung in the storage space between the sloping wall and the piece of furniture.

The invention further relates to an assembly of pieces of furniture as described above, wherein the pieces of furniture are placed in one line. Such an assembly has the same advantages and effects as described above for the piece of furniture.

The assembly preferably comprises at least one so-called walk-in closet, wherein the frame of the walk-in closet is open on the rear side, i.e. on the side of the displaceable rear wall, such that the space behind the walk-in closet can be accessed during use .

The assembly according to the invention has the advantage that it can be adapted to any sloping wall. The assembly can thereby also be used in a new home after a move.

The invention also relates to a method for manufacturing a piece of furniture or assembly as described above. Such a method has the same advantages and effects as described above for the piece of furniture and the assembly.

Further advantages, features and details of the invention are elucidated on the basis of preferred embodiments thereof, wherein reference is made to the accompanying figures.

In stowed position the slide-out bed of piece of furniture 16 is situated partially in storage space 7. In the shown embodiment the front sides of bed 46 and drawer 48 lie flush in the stowed situation. Cabinets are provided above the slide-out bed. Bed 46 can also be embodied as a double bed. Drawer 48 can contain a cushion, whereby bed 46 can be used as a couch.

Alternatively, drawer 48 is embodied as a second bed so that a kind of bunk bed is formed.

Piece of furniture 18 is a cabinet with two drawers. Walk-in closet 12 (fig. 2) comprises hook 50. This hook is mounted on the inner side of closet 12. The hook is placed after rear wall 22 has been set to the desired height. It is noted that hook 50 is optional.

Cabinet 18 (fig. 3) comprises a displaceable rear wall 30 which is displaceable in vertical direction as according to arrow C. Present on the upper side of rear wall 30 is flexible strip 42 which consists of a mounting part 52 of PVC with a U-shaped cross-section and an upper part 54 consisting of a flexible plastic. Rear wall 30 is displaceable as according to arrow C by means of rails 56, 58. The position of rear wall 30 can be locked by means of a wing nut, star grip or other releasable coupling (not shown) .

The present invention is by no means limited to the above described preferred embodiments thereof. The rights sought are defined by the following claims, within the scope of which many modifications can be envisaged. It is thus possible for instance to manufacture the rear wall wholly from flexible material.
