Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a polarization separation element, a polarization separation element design method, an optical system, and an optical instrument that do not require a structure birefringence layer and can handle a wide incident angle with a simple multilayer film (laminated film). Provided is a polarization separation element 101e formed between a pair of light-transmitting substrates, wherein the transmittance of P-polarized light and the transmittance of S polarization light thereof differ by B% or more in the entire wavelength interval from a wavelength A1 (nm) to a wavelength A2 (nm), where A1 = λ × 0.86, A2 = λ × 1.7 (where λ (nm) is a design wavelength), and B (%) = 22.5. The polarization separation element 101e is a dielectric alternate laminate structure, and the dielectric alternate laminate structure has at least a broadband polarization separation film configuration, a first narrowband polarization separation film configuration, and a second narrowband polarization separation film configuration.
