Abstract:
Provided is a polar compound that has a high chemical stability, a high ability to align liquid crystal molecules, and a high solubility in a liquid crystal composition, and allows a liquid crystal display element to have a high voltage holding ratio. This compound is represented by formula (1). R1 represents hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl; rings A1 and A2 each represent an optionally substituted cyclohexylene, phenylene, or the like; a represents 0-4; Z1 represents a single bond or an optionally substituted alkylene; Sp1-Sp4 each represent a single bond or an optionally substituted alkylene; M1-M4 each represent H, F, Cl, or an optionally substituted alkyl; R2 and R3 each represent hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl; R4 represents a group selected from the groups represented by formula (1-a), formula (1-b), and formula (1-c); Sp5 and Sp6 each represent a single bond or an optionally substituted alkylene; R5 represents a hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl; and X1 represents -OH, -NH2, -COOH, -SH, or the like.
