Abstract:
This position determination system for a vehicle uses 1 GHz or greater radio waves to wirelessly communicate with a portable terminal carried by a user of a vehicle, thereby determining the position of the terminal relative to the vehicle. The position determination system for a vehicle is provided with: a cabin-external communicator (12K, 12L, 12γ) that is installed on a side surface part of the vehicle and that has an antenna (31) for receiving a wireless signal transmitted from the portable terminal, and a strength detection unit (321) that detects reception strength of the wireless signal received by the antenna; and a position determination unit (F4) that, on the basis of outdoor unit strength, which is the reception strength of the wireless signal from the portable terminal detected by the cabin-external communicator, determines whether or not the portable terminal is present in an operational area, which is a region outside of the cabin within a predetermined operational distance from the vehicle. The cabin-external communicator is installed below a door of the vehicle, in an orientation such that the center of directivity of the antenna is oriented upward or downward.
