Abstract:
A power drive unit (29) having drive roller elements (45) that transport cargo and a sensor (44) that detects motion of the cargo, e.g., the speed at which the cargo is transported, where the sensor (44) operates substantially independently of the motion of the drive roller elements (45). Specifically, the power drive unit (29) comprises a motor (41), an output shaft (48) driven by a motor (41), at least one drive roller element (45) fixedly mounted on the output shaft (48), the drive roller element (45) thereby driven by the motor (41), a sensor (44) frictionally coupled to the output shaft (48) conditionally permitting relative rotation between the sensor (44) and the output shaft (48), and a motion detector (73) that detects motion of the sensor (44). Associated electronics (71) are configured to remove power from the motor driven roller elements (45) where cargo is jammed or parked upon them, thereby increasing the useful lifetimes of the motor (41) and the drive roller elements (45) of the power drive unit (29).
