Abstract:
The present invention relates to preparation of benzyl chloride using a continuous photochlorination process in a tower. An aromatic hydrocarbon compound of formula (X)aC6H6-a-b(CH3)b is formed into a liquid film in flow, and undergoes a membrane interface photochlorination reaction with chlorine gas under illumination conditions. A hydrogen atom in a side chain methyl group is substituted with chlorine to form monochlorobenzene at the beginning of the reaction, and the chlorine gas can continue to be injected for reaction, replacing two hydrogen atoms in a benzyl group and substituting with chlorine to form dichlorobenzene, and continuing in a similar manner, such that hydrogen atoms in side chain methyl groups are gradually substituted by chlorine, and finally a product having all hydrogen atoms in the side chain methyl groups completely substituted by chlorine can be obtained. The main advantages of the application are: fewer side reactions, a high product yield, a high product purity, ease of further purification, high reaction efficiency, short production time, and suitability for industrial production.
