Title:
PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ULTRAFINE CRYSTALLINE SILK
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2000/075219
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A process for industrially producing, through the physical pulverization of silk fibers, a crystalline silk fibroin powder having an average particle diameter smaller than 3 $g(m)m which is usable in various applications. A silk material such as cocoon fiber, silk, or raw silk is contacted with an aqueous alkali solution at a temperature of 100 to 150 °C and a pressure of 1 to 5 atm to reduce the tensile strength of the silk material to about 0.02 g/d or lower, subsequently subjecting the silk material to alkali removal and drying, and then pulverizing the dried silk material to an average particle diameter smaller than 3 $g(m)m. Thus, a crystalline silk fibroin powder having an average particle diameter smaller than 3 $g(m)m is produced.
