Abstract:

A process was provided, by which alkanediol derivatives (II) can be produced from ester compounds (I) in safety and without racemization. Specifically, a process for the production of alcohol derivatives represented by general formula (II) [wherein R?2¿ and R?3¿ are each independently hydrogen or C¿1-4? alkyl; X is hydrogen or a hydroxyl-protecting group; and n is 0 or 1], characterized by reducing an ester compound represented by general formula (I) [wherein R?1¿ is C¿1-4? alkyl; and R?2¿, R?3¿, X, and n are each as defined above] with sodium borohydride in a mixed solvent consisting of at least one hydrocarbon solvent selected from the group consisting of aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and alicyclic hydrocarbons, and a primary alcohol.
