Abstract:
An illuminator for illuminating an object to be illuminated uniformly with high light use efficiency and an apparatus for displaying an image with excellent color, field-of-view characteristics luminance, and uniformness are disclosed. Further an excellent image display comprising such an illuminator as its light source. Diffraction optical elements are used for converging the luminous flux from a lamp and for deflecting image light. Specifically, the scattering anisotropy, variation of diffraction efficiency, and variation of transmission characteristics with the incident angle and wavelenght are used. In addition, other optical elements such as a Fresnel lens are used.
