Description:
Roller shutter box

The subject of the invention is a roller shutter box, which is integrated with the upper frame of the door or window, overhanging beyond the outer side of the door or window. The roller shutter box is a one-piece extruded multi-chamber structure with braces between its border walls and the inner border wall of the roller shutter roll. Furthermore, it is also fastened to the wall structure. The roller shutter boxes currently used include ones independently built into the wall structure, ones fitted together with the door or window, and ones built in front of the door or window. According to the current state of the art, the types fitted with the door or window, which also include our invention, are usually composed of double-wall extruded panels or made using moulded polystyrene foam, equipped with braces. These types are characterised by some intrinsic defects, which lead to lower usability. One example is the insufficient stiffness of the panel-based roller shutter box, resulting in deformation. In this case, the door or window and the wall structure do no constitute an integrated whole due to the gap between them, with the roller shutter box functioning as a vacant space, and because these roller shutter boxes only contain an auxiliary thermal insulation insert, a thermal bridge may be formed. Additionally, they cannot be attached to the door or window and to the wall with sufficient strength. In the case of roller shutter boxes made of polystyrene foam, the door or window can mostly be attached to a wooden or plastic insert integrated into the lower part of the housing. Fixation to the wall is usually carried out using an auxiliary bracket. In the case of the type consisting of panels, there is no integrated bracing of sufficient strength for attachment to the door or window or to the wall structure. Larger doors or windows fitted together with this type of roller shutter boxes may be subject to displacement after installation. Further unfavourable characteristics influencing usability: layout and the lack of spacers. Also, the installation of optional insect screens is not possible. The types of roller shutter boxes mentioned above face the inner space. Consequently, viewed from the inside, they do not constitute an integrated whole with the door or window. The distance between the roller shutter and the door or window is too small, which may be problem with doors equipped with outer handles, drip plates or water discharge elements. In summary: none of these structures fulfil all of the above requirements at the same time.

A German patent document (No. DE 2552194) describes a U-section-based roller shutter box rolling to the inside, open at the bottom. It is connected to the upper frame of the window at the part that is open at the bottom. The roller shutter structure can be accessed from the bottom. The roller shutter box has a multi-chamber braced structure, made of extruded material. Its chambers are filled with thermal insulation.

The description fails to provide a solution for the fixation and integration of the roller shutter box in the way our invention does. Due to its design, its thermal insulation characteristics seem to be insufficient. No matter how it is built in, it does not ensure that the inside plane of the roller shutter box is flush with the inside plane of the door or window.

The roller shutter box based on the Gentian patent document No. DE 19959736 is integrated with the upper frame of the door or window. The roller shutter box described in the invention is, rather than an organic roller shutter box, a group of panels, to which further elements can be attached. Quite literally: "preparation for a space suitable for a roller shutter to be attached to a window frame installed in a wall aperture". It is heat insulated, and placed on the side facing the outer space. With this solution, the structure of the roller shutter box is not sufficiently strong. An insect screen may only be installed on the door or window if the roller shutter opens along the outer edge of the roller shutter box, resulting in a very large distance to the door or window. It has to be decided already at the time of installing the roller shutter box whether an insect screen will be used. The fastening of the roller shutter box does not provide the kind of stability that characterises our solution.

These known approaches do not allow the creation of the roller shutter box design that we have developed. Our solution uses a steel profile at the top and bottom parts of the roller shutter box in order to ensure strong attachment to the wall structure and to the door or window.

This invention is aimed at creating a roller shutter box that can be integrated with a door or window, which has a strong structure, allowing secure fixation to the door or window or to the wall structure, forming an organic whole with the door or window, functioning as a spacer between the roller shutter and the door or window, offers thermal insulation, and allows the use of various types of optional insect screens.

According to the invention, this can be achieved by ensuring that the door or window and the roller shutter box constitute a closed flush system towards the inner space, meaning that there is no gap between the wall structure and the door or window. Therefore, its operation is based on rolling to the outside, meaning that the roller shutter is rolled up towards the outer space.

Our goal can be achieved if the roller shutter box has a multi-chamber extruded structure, closed on the side facing inside, the inner border wall of the roller shutter roll has a cylindrical shape at the container part of the rolled-up shutter, the border wall of the roller shutter box and the inner border wall of the roller shutter roll are connected with braces, and the appropriate chambers of the roller shutter box are filled with insulation foam along the entire length of the structure. We have realised that if section steel elements are installed in one of the lower and one of the upper chambers of the housing, or a channel specifically designed for this purpose, to ensure strong attachment to the wall structure, and if a groove is formed following the direction of the section steel installed along the top part of the roller shutter box, and if connection claws are added, protruding from the bottom of the housing, to be connected to the door or window, we can achieve our goal. An overhanging spacing surface may also be created for optional insect screens at the bottom part of the roller shutter box, which serves as a spacer between the door or window and the rolled-down roller shutter.

This means that our invention is a roller shutter box, which is integrated with the upper frame of the door or window, overhanging beyond the outer side of the door or window. The roller shutter box has a one-piece extruded structure. It is equipped with braces between its border walls and the inner border wall of the roller shutter roll. It is also fastened to the wall structure. The chamber(s) or the channel(s) created for the support elements within the roller shutter box contain steel supports. The roller shutter box is fastened to the door or window and the wall structure via these steel supports.

The preferred embodiments of our invention are described in the claims.

The roller shutter box based on this invention is described in more detail with the help of images. Figure 1 shows the lateral view of the cross-section of the roller shutter box.

Figure 2 shows the lateral view of the cross-section of a roller shutter box fitted together with a door or window, integrated into the wall structure with a stepped lintel.

Figure 3 shows the lateral view of the cross-section of a roller shutter box fitted together with a door or window, integrated into the wall structure with a standard lintel.

The roller shutter box based on our invention (17) is attached to the upper frame of the door or window (12). The roller shutter box (17) is essentially built on the door or window (12) in a way that it extends beyond the outer side (25) of the door or window (12). The roller shutter roll (20) opens along the outer side of the door or window (12) in guide rails (13). The roller shutter box (17) is a one-piece extruded multi-chamber structure with braces (3) (Figure 1). The braces (3) are arranged between the border walls (1, 16, 23) and the inner border wall (2) of the roller shutter roll. The roller shutter box (17) is attached, in addition to the upper frame of the door or window (12), to the wall structure (19) (Figures 2 and 3) using fixing elements (9), most commonly bolts. The support channels (7) integrated in the chambers (10) or in the roller shutter box (17) contain steel supports (6) (Figures 1 to 3). It is not necessarily required to create a separate chamber (10) for the supports (6), customised to the size of the supports (6), but, when appropriate, assembly may be made easier by creating a channel (7) fit to the size of the supports (6). This means that a chamber (10) may also house the support (6) if, for example, the lateral walls of the channel (7) shown in Figure 1 are omitted. The proper installation of the support element (6) calls for expert knowledge. The roller shutter box (17) is attached to the door or window (12) and to the wall structure (19) through the support element (6) using fixing elements (9). The chambers (10) are filled with thermal insulation (4) (Figures 1 to 3). In the upper border wall (16) of the roller shutter box (17), an external groove (14) is created to house the fixing bracket (15). In the lower border wall (23) of the roller shutter box (17), there are snap-in claws (5) to facilitate the positioning of the roller shutter box (17) to the door or window (12). The inner border wall (1) of the roller shutter box (17) facing inside (24) is installed flush with the inner plane (24) of the frame of the door or window (12). The lower border wall (23) of the roller shutter box (17) incorporates a spacing surface (8). This is to ensure that there is enough space between the outer surface of the rolled-down shutter (20) and the door or window (12) for door handles or other elements projecting from the surface of the door or window (12) between the shutter (20) and the door or window (12). The spacing surface (8) also allows the installation of a pleated insect screen (11) or a framed rolled insect screen (18) on the spacing surface (8). Access to the assemblies (roller shutter (20) and movement (21)) located in the roller shutter box (17) is provided by the assembly cover (22).

Figure 1 shows the extruded multi-chamber roller shutter box (17), with a closed inner border wall (1). The inner border wall (2) of the space serving to accommodate the roller shutter roll (20) has a cylindrical shape, and is attached to the border walls (1, 16, 23) using braces (3), which together ensure the stability of the roller shutter box (17). The chambers (10) located between the border walls (1, 16, 23) and the inner border wall (2) of the roller shutter roll contain thermal insulation (4), which thus forms an organic whole with the roller shutter box (17), providing enhanced thermal insulation. The roller shutter box (17) is seated and attached against the door or window (12) similarly to the frame extensions commonly used for doors and windows: essentially, there are 5 claws projecting from the bottom of the housing, which snap into the grooves of the door or window (12), allowing secure positioning. The roller shutter box (17) is attached to the door or window (12) and to the wall structure (19) using a steel support element (6) in the upper channel (7) or one of the upper chambers (10) and a steel support element (6) in the lower channel (7) or one of the lower chambers (10).

Figure 2 shows an example of the installation of the roller shutter box (17) in a wall structure (19) created with a stepped lintel. The roller shutter box (17) can be fastened upwards to the wall structure (19) using fixing elements (9), such as through-bolts, through the steel support element (6) installed in the upper channel (7) or one of the upper chambers (10) of the roller shutter box (17). The door or window (12) and the roller shutter box (17) can be attached to each other using the steel support element (6) installed in the lower channel (7) or one of the lower chambers (10) of the roller shutter box (17) with the help of fixing elements (9), such as bolts. It is appropriate to fasten the housing both to the wall structure (19) and to the door or window (12) with a spacing of five hundred millimetres, along the entire structure. The optional insect screen (11), such as a pleated insect screen, can be placed between the door or window (12) and the guide rails (13), connected to the spacing surface (8).

Figure 3 shows the installation of the door or window (12) into a wall structure (19) created with a standard lintel. A fixing bracket (15) may be installed in the groove (14) running along the support element (6) in the upper border wall (16) of the roller shutter box (17), practically with a spacing of five hundred millimetres along the entire length of the structure, which needs to be attached to the support (6) fastening the upper part of the roller shutter box (17) using the fixing element (9). The other end of the fixing bracket (15) can also be fastened to the wall structure (19) using a fixing element (9), most commonly a bolt connection. The groove created by the spacing surface (8) may, for example, house a framed rolled insect screen (18).

Prior to assembling together the roller shutter box (17) and the door or window (12), and prior to integrating this assembly into the wall structure (19), the roller shutter box (17) is manufactured according to the desired size. Elements of the roller shutter box (17): extruded housing, two end elements, assembly cover (22). The width of the roller shutter box (17) must be identical with that of the door or window (12). After cutting the extruded housing to length, the steel support elements (6) must be slipped into the channels (7) or chambers (10), and then attached to the housing with a regular spacing. After that, the end elements can be fitted together with the housing.

The assembled roller shutter box (17) is then placed to the top of the door or window (12), in the correct position. When carrying out this step, the claws (5) located on the lower border wall (23) of the roller shutter box (17) are fitted into the standard grooves created in the frame of the door or window (12), flush with the inner border wall (1) of the door or window (12) facing inside (24). After correct positioning, the claws (5) located on the bottom of the roller shutter box (17) are snapped into the grooves. To finalise the assembly of the structure fitted together as described above, pre-drilled holes are made through the frame of the door or window (12) with a correct spacing in a way that the holes pass all the way through the frame and then reach and pass through the wall of the steel support element (6). Afterwards, assembly is finalised by creating bolt connections through the pre-drilled holes. The bores may then be covered using plugs. If necessary, the roller shutter box (17) is also attached to the side of the door or window (12) at the end elements using s.teel plates.

The door or window (12) complete with the roller shutter box (17) must be installed, positioned and fastened in the wall opening in the usual manner. The installation depth of the assembled structure is determined in accordance with the order of layers of the wall structure (19). The door or window (12) and the roller shutter box (17) of the structure are both attached separately to the appropriate parts of the wall structure (19). This ensures the stability of the dual structure. The roller shutter box (17) may be fastened using several methods. For example, prior to installation, the fixing bracket (15) commonly used for doors and windows may be attached to the roller shutter box (17) using bolts through the support element (6), placing it into the groove (14) on top of the roller shutter box (17). After installation, the fixing bracket (15) is attached to the wall structure (19). Using another approach, the roller shutter box (17) may be fastened through the steel support element (6) placed into the channel (7) on the upper part of the roller shutter box (17). In this case, a through-hole is made on the support element (6), through which the roller shutter box (17) is attached to the wall structure (19) of the building using the fixing element (9), such as a bolt. After fastening, clearance spaces around the structure consisting of the roller shutter box (17) and the door or window (12) are filled with sealing material, such as polyurethane foam. After installation, the movement (21) and the roller shutter roll (20) are placed into the roller shutter box (17) from the outside (25), after opening the assembly cover (22). Finally, the guide rails (13) serving to lead the roller shutter roll (20) are installed under the roller shutter box (17). When appropriate, various types of insect screens (11) (Figure 2), such as a framed rolled insect screen (18), may be attached to the spacing surface (8) (Figure 3).

In the finishing stage, the roller shutter box (17) may be aligned with the wall structure (19) of the building: its external surface may be covered with insulation material (26), forming an even surface with it, or various types of covering materials may also be used. On the outside (25), the assembly cover (22) remains accessible after coating as well.

One advantage of the roller shutter box based on this invention is that it forms an organic whole with the door or window. It does not take up any space inside, meaning, for example, that a curtain may be placed at any distance from the door or window, or the roller shutter box may be concealed altogether. It provides a solution for thermal insulation. Its multichamber wall and method of attachment ensure a stable structure. Installation and operation are simple, thanks to its practical design.
