Disclosed in embodiments of the present application are a self-negotiation method and device. According to the method, a first interface acquires basic page information from a second interface, the basic page information comprising N bits; the N bits comprise an FEC function indicator bit sequence, the FEC function indicator bit sequence comprising an FEC capability indicator bit and an FEC requirement indicator bit; and according to the values of a plurality of bits among the N bits, the first interface determines a work mode supported by the second interface. The FEC function indicator bit sequence comprises a first FEC function indicator bit, the first FEC function indicator bit being used for corresponding to m FEC capabilities; or, the FEC function indicator bit sequence comprises a first FEC capability indicator bit, the first FEC capability indicator bit corresponding to n FEC capabilities, m and n are both greater than or equal to 1. One FEC function indicator bit indicates more FEC capabilities, thereby enabling the N bits of a basic page to be able to bear more information, and thus slowing down the process of increasing self-negotiation pages and avoiding affecting the efficiency of self-negotiation.
