This sewing machine is configured in such a way that a string-type material that is being swung in a lateral direction by means of a guide member is prevented from catching on peripheral components (in particular, a fabric pressing member). A guide member (29, 50) for guiding a string-type material (T) toward a sewing position reciprocates in a lateral direction, thereby zigzag stitching the string-type material (T) to an object being sewn. A restricting member (38, 60) has a laterally long part (38c, 60c) having a length corresponding to the range of reciprocation of the guide member (29, 50), and is provided in the vicinity of the guide member (29, 50). The string-type material extending from the guide member (29, 50) to the sewing position is disposed in such a way as to be positioned below the laterally long part (38c, 60c) of the restricting member (38, 60). The presence of the laterally long part (38c, 60c) causes the string-type material that is being swung left and right by the guide member (29, 50) when the guide member reciprocates to be reliably positioned (restricted) below the laterally long part. The restricting member (38, 60) may also have a cloth pressing function.
