Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing: a particle material that has excellent dispersibility in highly hydrophobic dispersion mediums, such as toluene; and a slurry composition using said particle material. It was discovered that by carrying out surface treatment by using a specific surface treatment agent to increase the degree of hydrophobization to be above a prescribed value, the dispersibility in highly hydrophobic dispersion mediums, such as toluene, could be improved. A surface modified particle material according to the present invention comprises: a particle material formed from an inorganic material; and an amount of a surface treatment agent for surface treating the particle material such that the degree of hydrophobization will be at least 30%, the surface treatment agent comprising a silane compound that has a first functional group having any among a C, N and O atom at least 5 positions away from the Si to which the alkoxide is bonded. By introducing a functional group having a prescribed structure so as to impart at least a prescribed amount of hydrophobicity, it is possible to increase dispersibility even in highly hydrophobic dispersion mediums.
