Provided is a feature that enables efficient observation conforming to terrain through a simple operation in surveying of a route or observation of the finished shape of a control cross-section. A surveying method involves using a position acquisition device (30) that acquires the positional coordinates of an operator, and a portable terminal (50) that is capable of communicating with the position acquisition device (30). The portable terminal (50) sets an advancement direction for observation and a first measurement point in three-dimensional plan data. The position acquisition device (30) is caused to acquire the positional coordinates of the operator. The portable terminal (50) guides the operator to the first measurement point. The position acquisition device (30) is caused to acquire the positional coordinates of the operator at the first measurement point. The point nearest to the first measurement point in the advancement direction is set as a second measurement point. Thereafter, the positioning of the operator, the measurement of the subsequent measurement point, and the guidance to the next measurement point are repeated.
