Abstract:
A lightning protection system for the joint of a modular blade. The joint comprises a number of coated metal elements by Xpacer â (15) equipotentially bonded with a number of stacks (9) disposed at the sides of the upper cap (4) and the lower cap (5) and with the lightning down-drop (17). The preforms of the joint comprise two stacks (9) at the leading edge (7) and another two stacks (9) at the trailing edge (8). The stacks (9) are formed by layers of carbon fibre (21) and layers of glass fibre (22), replaced by copper mesh (24) as from the equipotentiation line (23). Said stack (9) incorporates at the side thereof a metal strip (12) joined to the metal strip (13) that links the tip cap (2) and the root cap (3), and is coated with a layer of glass fibre. A number of metal strips (14) are bolted over all the Xpacers (15), are joined to said metal strips (13) and to the corresponding plate that holds the webs (18) together. The method of forming the stacks comprises the steps of folding the copper mesh (24), incorporating a metal strip (12), covering this with glass fibre (27, 28) and fusing the entire assembly.
