The present invention makes it possible to satisfactorily perform playback control of a compressed audio signal and/or a linear PCM signal on a reception side, if simultaneously transmitting the compressed audio signal and the linear PCM signal.　Audio signals continuous in prescribed units are transmitted sequentially to the reception side via a prescribed transmission path. For example, each prescribed unit of an audio signal is a mixed signal of a compressed audio signal and a linear PCM signal. Or, for example, audio signals continuous in prescribed units include an alternate arrangement between a prescribed unit of an audio signal containing a compressed audio signal and a prescribed unit of an audio signal containing a linear PCM signal. Playback control information for controlling playback of the compressed audio signal and/or the linear PCM signal is added to the audio signal.
