This vehicle control device is provided with a control means. When predetermined conditions, including a condition that at least the accelerator pedal is not depressed, are satisfied, the control means executes coasting travel control that releases a friction engagement element and sets the rotational speed of a rotating shaft of a drive source to zero. When it is predicted that the actual gear ratio can be changed to a target gear ratio during coasting travel control, the control means initiates coasting travel control even if the accelerator pedal is not depressed and the actual gear ratio of a continuously variable transmission is not the target gear ratio with regard to the coasting travel control.
