By presuming the phase of a rotor (R) when stopping, the present invention enables starting in a smooth synchronously rotating manner and control without a sensor, even if no position detection unit is additionally used. The washing machine comprises: wave wheels (15), for stirring the washing; a permanent magnet synchronous motor (M), and forward and reverse driving wave wheels (15); and a control unit (C), for controlling, without using a sensor, the starting and stopping of the rotor (R) of the motor (M). The control unit (C) comprises: a short circuit braking control portion (61), for performing short circuit braking when stopping; a stop phase presuming portion (7), for presuming the phase of the rotor (R) when stopping by a phase current before stopping during phase current flowing through a winding by means of short circuit braking; and a storage portion (8), for storing the presumed stop phase. The control unit (C) retrieves, when starting, the presumed stop phase of the rotor (R) from the storage portion (8), and on this basis, generates, when the synchronous rotation starts, a positioning current vector as a current vector for positioning the rotor (R).
