Abstract:
To overcome the inconveniences concerning application of painting or other surface preparations to an aircraft fuselage before installation of wings and main landing gears.SOLUTION: An airframe handling device is operable to support and move a partially assembled aircraft fuselage. The aircraft fuselage is incomplete and lacks wings and landing gears. The device is attachable to the aircraft fuselage in place of wings and landing gears by utilizing wing attachment structures on the aircraft fuselage, which are designed for flight loads. With the aircraft fuselage attached to the device, the entire fuselage is supported on the device that can be operated to move and manipulate the aircraft fuselage as if wings and landing gears are present. With the device attached to the aircraft fuselage, movement of the fuselage by the device imparts no internal loads due to carriage on the aircraft fuselage, and maximizes unobstructed access to the exterior surface of the fuselage for painting and other surface preparations.SELECTED DRAWING: None
